Fare price changes across Essex

Published: 07 January 2026

FirstBus new distance-based Single fares will see the majority of customers paying the same or in some cases less to travel, with prices for adults from £2 and £2.50 up to the maximum £3 national fare cap for the longest journeys. The Tap and Cap fare in Colchester and prices within this will remain the same with a maximum £2.50.

The new fares structure brings more consistency to pricing of shorter journeys across the Essex network. Child Single fares continue to be set at a proportion of the adult fare.

This is also helping to pave the way for their plans to introduce Tap on, Tap off (TOTO), an enhanced contactless system that guarantees customers ultimate flexibility on the fare paid. It is anticipated TOTO will be available in Essex by March.

There will be an increase to local tickets for all-day travel for adults ranging from 20p-50p depending on the area and Weeklies by £1 or £2, with child versions priced in proportion.

Full details of the new fares are now being communicated to customers and can be found on the First Bus website Fare Changes from Sunday 11 January 2026 | First Bus.
