Champions Manor Hall - A brief history of the site
Older residents of the town, and those who have lived here many years, will remember a time before Champions Manor Hall Community Centre was built when South Woodham County Primary School stood on the site in Hullbridge Road. Some will remember attending the school, spending their playtimes and sports days on the field which is now home to a bowling green. However, a leaflet produced for the Town Council by South Woodham Ferrers Local History Society looks further back than this, to the 1800s when the site was part of a field called "Broad Hams" on Champions Farm. The four-page leaflet then charts the history of the site through the "plotland" era to its purchase by Essex County Council in 1928 for the purpose of building a school for the village and the acquisition in 1953 of the adjacent Baptist church to enlarge the school premises. Seeing the need to provide additional community facilities, the Town Council acquired the site and, following the demolition of the former school, opened the Community Centre in 2004.

Copies of the leaflet are available free of charge from the foyer in Champions Manor Hall, from the Town Council office on the first floor or from The Community Information Centre in Baron Road. Or you can download a leaflet here.
