Bins & Recycling

One of the biggest requests we get are to do with replacement rubbish bins, sacks and bags.

South Woodham Ferrers Council no longer supply any items to residents. All services are controlled via Essex Waste Partnership, and for South Woodham Ferrers, this is via Chelmsford City Council. Please do not come to the Town Council offices to ask for recycling sacks, bags or bins, as we cannot supply these any longer, and have no stocks!

You can use the On Line Form to order directly from Chelmsford City Council via the link ~HERE     or you can call them on 01245 615800

Clear sacks for recycling

Between September and October, Chelmsford City Council deliver a roll of clear sacks to every household. The roll contains enough sacks for you to use one a week, and should last for 12 months.

They do not deliver any additional clear sacks for plastics, either to homes or local outlets, such as libraries or parish councils.
This is because they want to:
  • reduce our use of single-use plastics, in line with their climate emergency declaration
  • encourage residents to recycle more efficiently and not use the sacks for other purposes

To get the most out of your bags, they suggest that you wash, squash and put the lids back on plastic bottles. This will remove the air from the packaging and allow you to fit more in each sack.

They also recommend that you:
  • only put the sack out when it’s full
  • consider reducing the amount of single-use plastic you consume
If you still need additional bags for recycling single-use plastics, you can buy clear bags from supermarkets, hardware shops or online retailers. They just ask that you make sure they are slightly transparent, so their collection operatives can identify the contents as plastic recycling.

You should not:

  • use black bin liners
  • take your clear sacks to an Essex County Council-operated Recycling Centre for Household Waste
They do not accept as many types of plastic packaging as Chelmsford City kerbside collection services and may not be able to recycle your plastic.

Missed collections or other issues,

You can contact Chelmsford City Council on 01245 615800 . Please note the recycling centre is operated by Essex County Council.

Roadside Bins

The 'public' bins are emptied by Chelmsford City Council, although there are some in the Town Centre who are privately owned and are emptied by their contractors.

We also have some E.S.O's employed by the Town Council who carry out additional cleans, to help Keeping the Town Tidy.

Dog bins are emptied once a week, and are designed for use by walkers and NOT for disposal of waste from residents gardens/property.. These should be placed in your Black Bin. You could be fined for mis-use of these bins, if you are caught using them. Bylaws apply to our land and also that of the village hall and playing fields, as regards to a failure to clear up after your dog.

If there is no dog bin, you can take your poo bag home, or place it in a normal bin.

You can report overflowing bins to Chelmsford City Council on 01245 615800
