Becoming a Town Councillor in the UK
Are you passionate about your local area and want to make a difference? Becoming a town councillor gives you the opportunity to represent the views of residents, influence decisions on local services, and work on projects that improve the community.
To stand as a candidate for a town council, you must meet the following criteria:
Be at least 18 years old.
Be a British citizen, a qualifying Commonwealth citizen, or a citizen of any European Union country.
Be registered as a local government elector in the area or have lived, worked, or owned property in the council area for at least 12 months prior to the election or co-option.
Town councillors play a key role in decision-making on local issues such as planning, environmental initiatives, and community projects. It’s a voluntary position, but one that carries significant influence and impact on the well-being of your neighbourhood.
No prior experience is needed—just a commitment to listening to the needs of your community and working collaboratively with others. Town councils welcome people from all walks of life, encouraging diversity to ensure all voices are represented.
