Open Spaces

South Woodham Ferrers manages a selection of outside spaces. These include:

Victoria Fields, Fenn Park, Collingwood Pond, Garden of Remembrance, Village Hall Blue Cage and Playground, John Cox Playing Fields, South Woodham Fen (Fenn)* , Millennium Square and the War Memorial,

Uniform Youth – owned, but managed by the local groups

South Woodham Ferrers Allotments -owned, but managed by the Woodham Allotment Association.

South Woodham Ferrers Bowls Green - owned, but managed by the local Bowls Club

The Bandstand only- not any surrounding land,

Champions Manor Hall/ Town Council Offices, and it's car park, which is reserved for hall users, those accessing Town Council services and bowlers ONLY

Some of our Town Bins. Normally these are blue for identification, but not always, Dog bins are installed by the Town Council, but we do not empty them. This is the responsibility of the City Council, Certain benches around the town, but not all of them, Life Ring along Fenn Creek Nr Celeborn Street.

We are NOT responsible for :

Saltcoats Park, Compass Gardens, Frankland Fields, Trinty Square, The Village Hall or Playing Field or Radars Hut, or any of the hedges, any of the other playgrounds or small parks or green spaces, Streets,roads, footways or alleyways, footpaths over land or fields, land around the railway, other than over at the Fen;The crossing itself is owned by Network Rail.Any of the car parks in the town centre area, including Asda property, South Woodham Ferrers Sports Centre, Marsh Farm Country Park or its pathways, Mark Farm Park. 

Day to Day management is done via the ESO's, Town Council Officers, our contractors, and the Town Clerk. Projects and improvements or maintenance are controlled by the Town Council Planning and Environment Committee, often taking advice from the Open Spaces Working Party. Some decisions are made by full council. Meetings are open to the public and you can come along to these, or make comments via the Town Clerk. 

 

*South Woodham Fen is managed currently by Essex Wildlife  

Current Projects and Updates on Past Works

John Cox Playing Fields 

 

The Town Council have heen carrying out inprovement works on the John Cox Playing Fields, starting with the installation of a new gate and hard standing at the entrance area by the car park. Other works will continue to improve the area including improving a pathway to connect to the coastal footpath. 

 South Woodham Fen 

 

In 2025, we carried out selected tree works for safety reasons, and replaced 2 bridges over Fenn Creek. We also carried out cutting back works, and Essex County Council carried out works along a stretch of footpath in connection with the King Charles III footpath project. 

 Collingwood Pond

 

We carried out some tree works in 2025 at the edge of the pond due to mittigation against root damage to nearby buildings. In February 2026, our contractors carried out clearing works, removing litter and flytipping from the bottom of the pond. 

Garden of Remembrance 

During 2025, we carried out works to replace the sleepers in the sensory garden, the rotunda and benches were painted, we installed a new letters to heaven post box, we installed some new memorial roses.  So far the letters to heaven box has been over 70 items posted since September 

Millennium Sqaure 

 

During 2025, we replaced the post for our Town Sign.  

Bandstand 

Our Bandstand will get another make-over during March 2026, with a re-paint and also the installation of new railings. During 2025, we installed new lights, which we can change the colours on to mark certain events, and also carried out works to upgrade the electrics. Champions Manor Hall

During 2025, we renewed our emergency lighting, installed new solar panels and battery storage, and we renewed our main kitchen fridge unit. We continue to be popular with local groups and classes and there are a spread of interests available. Rooms and Halls are available to hire at competitive rates. Please get in touch to find out more.
