Army and Navy Sustainable Transport Package latest news

Residents have been given a more detailed look at plans to transform the Army and Navy junction following the release of a new video.

The video shows the planned new layout at the junction, as well as improvements to bus, walking and cycling connections to and from Great Baddow, Moulsham, Chelmer Village and the city centre.

The scheme includes a hamburger roundabout (a new roundabout with a road through the centre of it) at the Army and Navy junction.

There will also be a signalised left-turn slip road created between Chelmer Road and Essex Yeomanry Way.

Significantly improved walking and cycling facilities are planned at ground-level, replacing the current subway and creating attractive, safe and accessible routes.

Wider improvements on the approaches to the junction include:

  • An improved give-way arrangement at the Lady Lane junction with Van Diemans Road, including a parallel crossing to help make it safer and easier for people to cross

  • A two-way segregated cycleway on the western side of Van Diemans Road

  • Shared use footways/cycleways on the northern side of Baddow Road and on Meadgate Avenue, providing a new route through to the Army and Navy junction from Great Baddow

  • A two-way segregated cycleway and footway along Essex Yeomanry Way, connecting Meadgate Avenue to the Army and Navy junction

  • A footway/cycleway from the Army and Navy junction into the city centre, running from near the Aldi store on Parkway, alongside the river and via Kings Head Walk

  • Public spaces on Baddow Road, Goldlay Road and off Parkway, including benches and landscaping

  • New bus priority measures, including a northbound bus lane on Princes Road between the Waterson Vale roundabout and Lady Lane junction, and new bus lanes on both sides of Parkway

The video also highlights the significant benefits of the project, including journey time improvements for buses, general traffic and people walking and cycling.  To view more information about it, including the video, Click HERE
