Red Heat Health Alert in place from Wednesday
Published: 22 June 2026
Many people across Essex will welcome the warmer weather, but when temperatures remain very high for several days it is important to take simple steps to stay safe and well.
An Amber Heat Health Alert is currently in effect across Essex. However, as temperatures are expected to increase further and remain high, a Red Heat Health Alert has now been issued and will come into effect from 1:00am on 24 June until 11:00pm on 25 June 2026.
This change reflects an increased risk that the hot weather could affect people's health and wellbeing, particularly those who are more vulnerable to the effects of heat.
While most people will enjoy the sunshine safely, hot weather can have a greater impact on older people, babies and young children, people living with long-term health conditions, and others who may be more vulnerable.
We are encouraging everyone to take a few simple steps to stay well during the hot weather, including looking after family members, friends and neighbours who may need extra support. Our Executive Medical Director, Dr Matthew Sweeting, shares advice to help residents stay safe and well, including:
- drinking plenty of water throughout the day
- avoiding prolonged time in direct sunlight during the hottest part of the day
- keeping homes and indoor spaces as cool as possible
- checking in on older or vulnerable friends, neighbours and relatives
- knowing the signs of heat exhaustion and when to seek medical advice
By taking a few simple precautions, most people can continue to enjoy the warmer weather safely.
