Cycling and walking routes

There are plenty of reasons to leave the car at home, and walk or cycle. For local residents, you can reach many parts of the town within a 20 minute walk. For the visitor, why not arrive by bus or train and start your walk into some spectacular countryside.

Walking

There are many Rights of Way, footpaths, Fen Paths and coastal paths in South Woodham Ferrers, along with a number of recommended routes, such as our Jubilee walk. The Fen & John Cox areas are a great way to get out an enjoy nature, even in the winter with a good pair of wellies!

If you’re bored of your usual cycle routes, or want to try cycling, but aren’t sure where to start, you can try our family-friendly cycle rides.

There are short, medium and long route options, so you can choose one to suit you.

The shorter routes are ideal for families with younger children and can easily be completed on a balance bike or scooter. If you’re new to cycling, you might like to start with a short route and build your way up to a longer one.

Each route takes you through some of Chelmsford’s prettiest scenery. They avoid large roads, so are perfect for building confidence. The maps also highlight interesting places to visit along the way, spots to take a pitstop, and the best backdrops for a mid-cycle selfie. Some of them even have ping-pong tables en-route, so you can mix it up with a different form of exercise!

It’s important to be aware of your surroundings when cycling, and it also helps to keep rides fresh and interesting. So, each map comes with a quiz to see if you paid attention along the way!
